If you learn one thing from this site, make it this: in youth hockey helmets, paying more does not reliably buy more protection.

star_score is Virginia Tech's own metric; a LOWER score indicates better measured performance. Youth scores are not comparable to their adult hockey scores. Price of the helmet and facemask configuration at the time of testing, as published by Virginia Tech. Not a current retail price. What actually matters
The specific model. Two helmets from the same brand at the same price can test very differently. When Season Plan recommends a helmet, that exact model has passed five separate checks: exact identity confirmed, HECC certification record verified, independent lab rating reviewed, checked against the recall data we hold, and priced as the complete helmet-plus-cage combo — because a "cheap" shell price with no cage is a common trick.
Two things every parent should know
Helmet certifications expire. HECC certification stickers carry an expiration based on manufacture date (6½ years). A hand-me-down with an expired sticker no longer meets requirements, full stop — check the sticker before anything else.
Fit beats everything. A hockey helmet should sit about one finger width above the eyebrows, level, with the chin strap snug enough that the helmet doesn't rock front to back — and always check the manufacturer's own fitting instructions for the model you own. Hockey Canada's guidance is blunt: protective equipment should never be bought oversized "to grow into," because gear that's too big slides away from the area it protects. A well-fitted $70 helmet with a current certification and a strong lab rating is the smart buy.

We deliberately do not use the word "safe" about any product. No test can promise that. We can tell you what was verified and what wasn't — that's what these guides do.
