Local shops

The thing no national retailer can tell you: which shop near you actually fits skates well, takes trade-ins, or will size a kid for free on a Tuesday night.

Season Plan is building a directory of local pro shops, starting in Massachusetts and New England, focused on the questions that actually matter to a family:

Do they fit skates?

The one thing that genuinely cannot be done online. Skate sizing isn't shoe sizing, and width and foot volume can't be judged at home.

Do they take trade-ins or sell used?

A shop with a consignment wall is the cheapest way to outfit a growing kid, and most families never think to ask.

Do they sharpen, and what does it cost?

A recurring cost nobody warns you about, and it varies more than you'd think.

Will they size a beginner for free?

Plenty will. It's the fastest way to turn guesswork into a real shopping list.

What to ask when you call

  1. "Do you do skate fittings, and do I need an appointment?" Start here — it shapes everything else.
  2. "My kid is new. Can you size them so I know what I'm shopping for?" Even if you buy elsewhere, knowing the size ends the guessing.
  3. "Do you carry last year's models or open-box?" Frequently the same gear, meaningfully cheaper, and it rarely makes it onto a website.
  4. "Do you take trade-ins, or sell used gear on consignment?" The answer to outgrown equipment, in both directions.
  5. "What does a sharpening cost, and how often for a beginner?" Budget the season, not just the purchase.
